چکیده

Prior research has consistently demonstrated that people are reluctant to trade a good they own for an alternative good, particularly when the alternative (or “target”) represents a substantial departure from the “endowment”. We demonstrate that the endowment effect can be reduced by first making participants consider trading their endowment for an intermediate alternative (which shares some characteristics of the endowment and some characteristics of the target). We find that this “intermediate alternative effect” operates primarily by shifting one's reference point in the direction of the target alternative. Even when the intermediate alternative is not adopted, the extent to which one's endowment is treated as a reference point is weakened, which can also facilitate subsequent trading. © 2011 Society for Consumer Psychology. Tradeoffs and theory: the double-mediation model.

Most theories of decision making suggest that, when options imply tradeoffs between their attributes, conflict increases as tradeoff size increases, because greater sacrifices are to be incurred in choosing one option instead of another. An alternative view is that conflict decreases as tradeoff size increases, because stronger arguments can be made for any decision. The authors propose a unifi...

Tradeoff-induced Decision Anxiety: Unintended Negative Effects on Preferences for Decision Aids

As computer-based decision aids become more widely available – both online and on the office desktop, better insights are needed into how their design features influence people’s willingness to use them. This research hypothesizes and shows that the extent to which decision aids require decision makers to explicitly confront difficult tradeoffs increases their decision anxiety, undermining thei...

A genetic algorithm approach for a dynamic cell formation problem considering machine breakdown and buffer storage

Cell formation problem mainly address how machines should be grouped and parts be processed in cells. In dynamic environments, product mix and demand change in each period of the planning horizon. Incorporating such assumption in the model increases flexibility of the system to meet customer’s requirements. In this model, to ensure the reliability of the system in presence of unreliable machine...

Information Presentation in Spoken Dialogue Systems

To tackle the problem of presenting a large number of options in spoken dialogue systems, we identify compelling options based on a model of user preferences, and present tradeoffs between alternative options explicitly. Multiple attractive options are structured such that the user can gradually refine her request to find the optimal tradeoff. We show that our approach presents complex tradeoff...
